PRF uses your own blood, spun down in a centrifuge machine which separates red blood cells from the platelets. PRF unlike PRP has the additional bonus of carrying growth factors such as fibrin, white blood cells and mesenchymal stem cells which slowly release over a number of days. The response by the body is then localized inflammation and tissue trauma which activates the body’s healing cascade and ultimately hair and collagen production. Advantages of
PRF for hair loss include
-strengthening existing hair
-reducing current hair loss

Over 40% of Americans suffer from patterned hair loss or androgenic alopecia (AA) by the age of 40, with over 80% affected by the age of 60. Hair loss maybe caused by hormonal changes, genetics, stress, UV damage, poor nutrition, inflammation or medications. Treatment options for AA are limited to oral medications (finasteride) which may have unwanted side effects (depression, sexual dysfunction) and takes up to 12 months to see improvement. Topical minoxidil has been shown to improve hair loss however also takes up to 12 months for improvement and carries the side effects of potential contact dermatitis, hypertrichosis and headaches. Surgical management for hair loss is an option however costly. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet rich fibrin (PRF) has been shown to aid in hair regrowth and appearance. Using only your body’s blood product this treatment is ideal for patients looking for outcomes without side effects of medications. Patients in general see new hair growth within two treatments and optimally undergo 4 treatments each 4 weeks apart.
